Agnes gomillion the record keeper6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Blind to so much because of her passion, when the truth finally reveals itself to her, she is, once again, burdened with loss and regret.īut, it’s that idea of blind passion that feels so prevalent in The Seed of Cain. But, again, it’s an excuse to hide larger machinations.Ĭaught up in protecting the Kongo and it’s people, Arika finds herself siding with figures she greatly mistrusts. Arika, hailed as a leader in the fight, is under investigation for her attack against the teacher who abused her so severely as a child. Instead of battles and retribution, the narrative picks up with a free Kongo yet one rife with political manoeuvring. Interestingly, the second book begins some time after the revolution against the system which ended The Record Keeper. The Seed of Cain demands attentive reading as it weaves multiple threads into an intriguing tapestry and an explosive ending. Sequel to The Record Keeper, Agnes Gomillion builds on the world and conflicts of the first book to produce a poetic, allegory filled story of truly epic proportions. Connelly brings to life the Tunnel Rats-the soldiers that lived and died in the dark, their screams heard as a black echo, just going on and on. I pressed my nose up against our Panasonic to watch the first horrible scenes ever shown live or nearly so on TV. I wasn't quite old enough to have experienced the Vietnam War, but my older sister was, and we used to watch the numbers come up in the morning newspaper, wondering which one of her friends would go next. When war is sewn into a story, it illustrates and makes real the suffering those who were int hose jungles experienced, teaching something we should all understand. When true history is woven into a story it gains dimension, and we all learn something. Black Echo is a very cool book, first off, because it says something about the Vietnam War that I never knew before, and I love history. ![]() Writers have a lot of energy when they first write a character they have that twinkle in the eye, just like in a new romance. The key D-Day spies were just five in number, and one of the oddest military units ever assembled: a bisexual Peruvian playgirl, a tiny Polish fighter pilot, a Serbian seducer, a wildly imaginative Spaniard with a diploma in chicken farming, and a hysterical Frenchwoman whose obsessive love for her pet dog very nearly wrecked the entire deception. But at its heart was the 'Double Cross System', a team of double agents controlled by the secret Twenty Committee, so named because twenty in Roman numerals forms a double cross. The deception involved every branch of Allied wartime intelligence - the Bletchley Park code-breakers, MI5, MI6, SOE, Scientific Intelligence, the FBI and the French Resistance. But it was also a triumph for a different kind of operation: one of deceit, aimed at convincing the Nazis that Calais and Norway, not Normandy, were the targets of the 150,000-strong invasion force. ![]() Summary D-Day, 6 June 1944, the turning point of the Second World War, was a victory of arms. ![]() ![]() Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.
